Kinaesthetic Bodies in Contemporary Literature
PhD in English and Comparative Literary Studies
University of Warwick
Oct 2013 - Oct 2018
Supervised by Dr Rashmi Varma and Prof Thomas Docherty
Jenny's PhD thesis looked at how literature represents embodied experiences of globalisation. Specifically, it considered how bodily-kinaesthetic intelligence could be valuable for helping us understand how resistance is enacted through bodies, especially by people who are marginalised under globalisation. She analysed contemporary literature from different cultural sites (the Caribbean, South Korea, Nigeria, Japan, U.S., U.K., and India) that provided accounts of such experiences. Her literary research ultimately elaborated on the idea of resistance, as it related to the role of the body under globalisation. Her research also links to world literature, literary aesthetics, and dance and performance studies.
